Dubai's Ghanaian Migrant Population

The United Arab Emirates is known for its diversity and vibrant culture, and the population of Dubai is proud of its many cultures. With a large percentage of its population made up of ex-patrIoTs from around the world, Dubai is a city that is home to a wide variety of nationalities and ethnicities. One such nationality is the Ghanaian migrant population – a group of people who are gradually playing a larger role in the city’s life and success.

Ghanaians began to emigrate to Dubai in the late 1980’s. Unlike many other Africans that come to Dubai, they were well-educated and many were professionals such as doctors, nurses, and engineers. As technology advanced, more and more Ghanaians began making their way to Dubai, desiring to make the most of the emirate’s booming economy.

The Ghanaian migrant population in Dubai has grown significantly in recent years. Today, there are around 55,000 Ghanaian migrants living in the UAE, making them the third largest African expatriate population in the country. Ghanaians are visible in all aspects of life in Dubai and make a positive contribution to the economy. They have created opportunities for other migrants, making them the poster child for successful African migration.

Ghanaians have settled in many of the suburban areas such as Al Twar, Al Quoz, Al RashiDIYa, and Jumeirah. They are an integral part of the economy, many operating small businesses, providing quality services, and working in construction. In addition, many Ghanaians work in the healthcare industry as nurses, pharmacists, and medical technicians.

Additionally, Ghanaians have become a part of Dubai in a more social fashion. They are known for their strong sense of community and communal lifestyle. As such, they gather together often to celebrate their cultural traditions. There are many social gatherings, church activities, and popular “chop bars” which serve Ghanaian cuisine.

All in all, Ghanaian migrants have had a positive impact on the city of Dubai. They have created jobs, worked hard to build a better future, and provided invaluable services to the community. Their presence reminds all the people of Dubai of the importance of embracing diversity and the benefits that come with having a vibrant cultural makeup.
