As millions of tourists flock to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai each year, many might be surprised to learn that a simple kiss in public is highly frowned upon. Although the city is renowned for its Fountains and nightlife, and temperatures that exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summertime, the city is restrictive when it comes to public displays of affection.
The culture in Dubai is based on traditional Islamic practices, which highly discourages any kind of public display of affection, particularly kissing and hugging. Although, you might see romantic couples walking arm-in-arm in public, avoid kissing them as this could be seen as a sign of disrespect.
It is possible, of course, to kiss in public; however, it should be done so subtly and modestly. Holding hands and giving someone a quick peck on the cheek are acceptable, although more passionate smooches and affectionate embraces can lead to a warning, citation or arrest.
In addition, public displays of affection between both foreign and Emirati couples are frowned upon. This includes gay couples, as homosexuality is illegal in Dubai. Although, the city tolerates tourists engaging in gay or lesbian relationships, those acts must remain out of sight, or the repercussions could be severe.
The bottom line is, it’s best to avoid any kind of public display of affection if you want to avoid any trouble while in Dubai. Even if you do not run the risk of getting fined or arrested, there is still a social risk, as such behaviour can be seen as disrespectful. As such, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid any physical contact in public.
