At more than 200,000 strong, the Philippine migrant population constitutes the second highest group of foreign nationals living in Dubai. Although a majority of them hold jobs in the domestic services and retail sectors, their contributions to Dubai’s economy and culture have been significant.
While some of the Filipinos have been in Dubai for multiple generations, the city only officially recognized its Philippine migrants in 1970, when a consulate was established to represent the Filipino community in the Emirate. Since then, the population has grown exponentially due to the abundance of job opportunities and a general climate of welcome and acceptance.
Thanks to the number of Filipinos living in Dubai, the city has become a center for creative and cultural activities. Bands and choirs made up of Filipino musicians enliven many public events, while restaurants and stores carrying Philippine staples draw long lines of customers, both Filipino and non-Filipino alike. Emirates NBD, one of the city’s major banks, even launched a special bilingual mobile banking app, accessible both in English and Tagalog, to make banking easier for migrant Filipinos.
Not only do the Filipino migrants play a part in the cultural and economic life of Dubai, they are also responsible for the growth in volunteer programs to the benefit of their own community. Many provide free education, healthcare, and housing to their fellow Filipinos.
For years, the Filipino migrants have filled a unique niche in Dubai’s society. Through their culture, cuisine, and spirit of charity, their presence has enriched the city in numerous ways. Today, they continue to do so, while carving out a space for themselves in the face of constant change.
