The Real Housewives of Dubai were one of the most popular reality television shows to come out of the Middle East. But, the show was cancelled in 2019 after only two seasons. Fans are wondering why the show was so abruptly cancelled, and here is what we know.
The cancellation of the Real Housewives of Dubai had a lot to do with regional politics. The show was filmed in Dubai, and the government was not happy with the way the show portrayed the country. The show was reportedly too opulent and flaunted wealth, which the government wanted to keep hidden from the world. Additionally, the show lacked diversity, as it only featured women from wealthy families plus a single non-Arab cast member.
In addition to issues of representation, censorship was another factor in the cancellation of the show. The National Media Council (NMC) in Dubai was in control of the editing process, and made sure that certain parts of the show were edited out before broadcast. This included any content that contained drugs, alcohol, or showed any kind of explicit behavior.
The show was also plagued by rumors of backstage drama. Rumors were circulating that the cast was not getting along, and this caused tension on set. Additionally, the women were reportedly being exploited and not compensated properly for their work. In response to these reports, the production company, Fireseed Media, released a statement that said, “We always strive to promote positive values and create an empowering environment for our cast and crew.â€
The cancellation of the Real Housewives of Dubai was a shock for many. Fans will be sorely disappointed not to see more of this fabulous cast, but hopefully this will not be the end of the Real Housewives franchise in the Middle East.
