The Truth Behind Dubai's Glamour

When most people hear the words “Dubai”, they think of the luxurious and extravagant life that the rich and famous lead. From the world’s tallest tower to the world’s most expensive hotel, Dubai is a place of opulence and grandeur. But beneath this glitz and glamour lies a truth that many are not aware of.

The truth is, the level of wealth and privilege enjoyed by some of the wealthy in Dubai is a stark contrast to the lives of the thousands of migrant workers who toil throughout the day in gruelling manual labour, rarely receiving the recognition and reward they deserve.

For instance, migrant workers are often employed by the government to build the luxurious structures that adorn the Dubai skyline. Many of them earn wages significantly lower than the ones given to locals, and live in cramped and poorly maintained labour camps. In some cases, their wages may not even cover basic necessities such as food, water and clothing.

Additionally, workers are often denied basic rights such as freedom of speech and the right to form unions. There are also reports of workers being subject to abuse and exploitation.

The stark inequality between the rich and the poor in Dubai is a major issue that needs to be addressed. It is important to remember that the glamorous and dazzling lifestyle of the city is made possible only because of the hard work and dedication of the migrant workers.

There are steps being taken by the government as well as certain non-governmental organisations to improve the lives of these workers, but much more needs to be done. It is time that the citizens of Dubai realise the truth behind the glamour and take meaningful steps towards promoting the rights and well-being of the city’s workers.
