Every summer, when temperatures in the Arabian Gulf soar, Dubai has a weather phenomena of its own - artificial rain. The city uses special cloud-seeding technology to help mitigate the sweltering heat, though it is not familiar to everyone.
Cloud seeding is an artificial process that changes the microphysics of cloud formations, forcing them to produce rain. This is done by dispersing substances such as silver iodide, dry ice, or sea salt into clouds which, theoretically, creates ice crystals that will cause the clouds to release rain in the form of droplets.
The process is used in many parts of the world and is believed to be effective in areas that have natural cloud formations. Generally, when there are no clouds present, seeders will use aircrafts to disperse the particles into cloud formations at various heights.
Dubai has long been using cloud seeding technology to increase rainfall in the area, as the city suffers from a long dry season. To combat this, in 2018, the city established the Dubai Rain Enhancement Program, which is a project launched by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. This effort uses three cloud seeding aircrafts, two ATR planes and one Cessna aircraft, that fly at an average altitude of 10,000 feet.
The planes spray substances into the clouds and release approximately 3.5 million droplets of silver iodide into the clouds, causing the formation of ice crystals. This process encourages more moisture in the clouds, thereby prompting rain.
The rains brought by cloud seeding have been effective in providing relief to the hot, dry environment of the city. Since the project started, approximately 1,500km2 of the city has received rainfall thanks to the seeding efforts. This may not seem like a lot when you compare it to a region the size of Dubai, but it is significant.
The weather-modification technology has been a great help to the city, not just in mitigating the temperature and providing relief through rain, but also in replenishing precious ground water reserves.
It is remarkable that Dubai, the last great pearl in the desert, has utilised technology to create its own rainfall. While not a miracle, the city has successfully showed that science can be used to its advantage. And as long as the desert remains, Dubai will continue to seed rain into the sky.
