With their recent announcement that their new plates are now available at a record-setting price of 1 million United Arab Emirates dirham, or the equivalent of $272,250, Dubai has officially taken the lead for the most expensive vanity license plate worldwide.

Dubai is no stranger to vanity plates. They've had vanity plates in the city since 2001, and in recent years, the prices have been increasing substantially each year. This year, the new AED 1 million mark is approximately three times more expensive than the most recent license plate to be offered in 2018, which came in at AED 350,000 ($95,700). And, prices to own vanity license plates will only be going up, as the government plans on increasing the cost of the popular license plates by 250,000 AED ($68,000) each year through 2021.

The concept of collecting vanity license plates isn't exclusive to Dubai. Many big cities in the United States, including New York, have been selling and auctioning off vanity plates for years. However, due to the high costs associated with the latest plates being sold in Dubai, and the sheikdom’s luxury lifestyle, it has quickly become the destination for those seeking the most lavish and expensive license plates.

Some of the iconic plates that have been sold so far include AED 180,000 ($49,000) for the plate ‘W2,’ AED 120,000 ($32,700) for the ‘Y1’ plate, and AED 100,000 ($27,225) for the plate ‘W0' – which was actually the first plate ever sold in Dubai.

Of course, it's important to note that many of the plates include letters and numbers that might be symbolic for local customers and may even refer to family names. But regardless of the message, these vanity plates have reach iconic status and are only likely to gain more attention and admiration as the government increases the prices in an attempt to make money off their popular novelty item.
